Why SCG Partners

Choosing a Recruitment Partner for Energy, Data Centre and Engineering Hiring in Asia

Most employers in this region can choose between large generalist agencies, global search firms and specialists. This page sets out the questions worth asking any of them, and where we honestly fit.

Six Questions Worth Asking

These are the questions that separate suppliers in practice. They apply to us as much as to anyone else you are considering.

Do they work in your sector every week?

A recruiter who covers renewables, data centres and heavy engineering all year builds a live map of who is where. A generalist rebuilds it from scratch for each brief, and the delay shows in the shortlist.

Can they map, not just search?

Ask whether you will see the market map or only the candidates who replied. If a supplier cannot describe who else holds the role across the region, they are working from availability rather than the market.

Do they cover the markets you hire in?

Singapore-only coverage is a real limitation when the pipeline runs into Johor, Batam, Vietnam or the Philippines. Ask specifically where they have placed, not where they say they operate.

Will they push back on the brief?

A partner who agrees to every specification will waste months hunting a profile that does not exist in this region. The useful conversation is the one where they tell you what is realistic.

How do they treat candidates?

In small talent pools, candidate experience is reputational. The way a firm handles the people it does not place determines whether the market takes its next call.

What happens after the offer?

Notice periods, counter-offers and relocation are where placements are actually lost. Ask what support exists between offer and start date.

How We Answer Them

Specialist by design

We work only in energy transition, renewable energy, engineering, infrastructure and industrial technology. That narrows what we can help with, and deepens what we know.

Regional, from Singapore

Our office is in Singapore and our searches run across ASEAN, which is how most of our clients are structured: a regional headquarters with delivery spread across several markets.

Advice before activity

We would rather tell you a role is mis-scoped, mis-priced or better filled on contract than start a search we do not believe in.

Published research

Our Market Insights are written from live search work rather than commissioned for marketing, and they are the same view we give clients privately.

Straight answers on what we do not do

We are not an immigration practice, not a payroll provider and not a generalist agency. Where something sits outside our scope, we say so.

Built for the long term

Our aim is to be the firm you call before the requirement is signed off, not the one you call when it is already late.

Where a Generalist May Suit You Better

High-volume corporate, retail or general commercial hiring, or roles far outside our sectors, are better served by a large generalist agency with the scale to match. We would rather point you there than take on work we cannot do well.

Where We Are the Right Call

Specialist project, engineering, commercial and operations roles in energy, data centres and infrastructure, particularly where the search spans several ASEAN markets or the appointment is the first of its kind in the region.

Questions Employers Ask Us First

Are you a generalist recruitment agency in Singapore?
No. We work within energy transition, renewable energy, engineering, infrastructure and industrial technology. If your requirement sits well outside those markets, a generalist agency will serve you better and we will say so early.
Do you only recruit for Singapore-based roles?
No. Singapore is our base and a large share of our work, but our searches run across Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, often for Singapore-headquartered employers with delivery across the region.
Do you work with international companies entering Asia?
Yes. A significant part of our work is with European and other international businesses establishing or scaling a Singapore and ASEAN presence, where the first appointments carry most of the risk.
What size of company do you work with?
From businesses making their first hire in the region through to established regional platforms. The common factor is specialist, hard-to-source roles rather than company size.
How do your fees work?
We keep fee structures off our website and confirm them in the first conversation, structured around whether you are hiring permanent, contract, retained or embedded.
How do we start?
A conversation about what you are building and by when. If we are not the right partner for it, we will tell you in that first call rather than three weeks later.
